I have always had issues finding shoes to fit me properly with a mega wide foot and usually have to compromise something. I contacted Customer Service for help and advice and was directed to these. They were excellent and extremely helpful. They fitted like a glove right from the start, are extremely comfortable and stay tight regardless of what I throw at them.
At last a Shoe manufacturer that cares and puts 100% into their products. Totally worth the price
First, my feet belong on a gorilla, not a human. These shoes are not wide enough for me as they come. However, I stretched the crap out of them with a shoe stretcher. As much pressure as I put on them I was sure they would give but I was going on 10 day biking trip with lots of hours each day in the shoes so I took the risk. They did not give. They are still a little more tight than I like but wow are these a well made shoe.
Note: these shoes stretch but not easily. My guess is they are not going to stretch much over the long term for those of you who find they come in a good fit. I really had to torque on them as well as use several solutions. I'm Sure I am no longer entitled to warranty but I doubt I will need it, nor would I claim it, with the torture I have put these shoes through.
I also love the fit for the rest of the foot. This, and the wide Lake road shoes I have, are the first biking shoes I have ever had that I could get in the proper length. I have had wide shoes in the past but I had to buy them in longer lengths to work. It is nice to have shoes that mostly fit. I probably should invest in a full custom shoe but I am not hardcore enough/cycle enough for that. For what is my more usual 1 to 3 hour rides several times a week, these shoes are spectacular. Still a little narrow for my gorilla feet on long days but perhaps with more brutal stretching I can make them even better.
Customer service is important to me. I tend to go with a somewhat lesser item if the customer service is great than a somewhat better item if the customer service is bad. Not only are Lake shoes great but in my limited experience so too is the customer service. Emails are answered promptly and there is no issue returning shoes. I bought these because I had ordered an even wider shoe from Bont but the customer service was nightmarish/non existent. Knew I could count on Lake to get these shoes to me quickly so I could stretch them and break them in before my trip.
Having recently returned to cycling after a lengthy break, pain from squeezing my nerve damaged feet into a standard cycling shoe was leading me to rethink my comeback. Thanks to the Lake Team and their MX238 Wide micro adjustable BOA fastening system, gravel and mountain biking is an option again.
MX 238 Wide
To be honest, I have yet to use my new MX 238. My gravel event begins in November. However, the fitting seems quite good. The ordering process was smooth. My special circumstance - an expat in Shanghai China - makes Lake supply from China super convenient for me. Otherwise, it is very difficult for me to find quality cycling shoes in China that are my size. By the way, the Shanghai cycling community is quite large and I believe knowing that Lake shoes can be sourced from China will be highly welcome.
