Lake MXZ305 Winter cycling boot

Lake MXZ305 Winter cycling boot

The legend lives on

For those who like to venture out in the coldest of climates, such as Scandinavia, North America and the Great Lakes region, the new MXZ305 is the ultimate in winter cycling shoe comfort, whatever the weather.  It’s a cycling shoe with heritage and history, being the evolution of over 40 years of innovation and excellence in cycling shoe design.

It was way back in 1997 that Lake invented the first true winter-specific cycling shoe - the MXZ300. We’ve come a long way since then, and multiple models have led us to the pinnacle in winter cycling comfort and performance – the all-new MXZ305!

The unique boot shape and construction of this cycling shoe create a warm environment for your feet in the worst conditions. Drawing on our experience, we’ve developed a shape and structure that trap warm air — the most effective natural insulator in any type of footwear. With room for thicker winter socks, we’ve increased the volume of the toe box to ensure the MXZ305 doesn’t restrict blood flow, since it’s your foot that generates the heat, the boot is designed to retain. By holding that heat in the form of trapped air, two things occur: your foot stays warm, and moisture buildup is reduced. The layer of warm air not only insulates but also allows the foot room to breathe, helping manage dryness throughout your ride.

And, because the MXZ305 uses a highly breathable leather upper and temperature-regulating, wicking lining, any sweat generated is transferred away from the foot so that it does not freeze against it, keeping your foot comfortable. Yes, the MXZ305 is the fifth generation of that Lake legacy of designing the ultimate winter boot, and it continues to be the best of the best as the top winter-specific cycling shoe of choice.

Sole music to keep you safe

The MXZ305 is built on our ultra-tough Enduro Sole with anti-slip lug inserts. It’s a sole that we’ve updated and reintroduced, having previously been used on our MXZ400. It has a wider sole platform, based on our winter ‘last’, giving you more stability on the ground, when hiking is more appropriate than biking!

The rubber sole features the same glass-injected tread inserts as the MXZ21, giving that necessary grip on just about any surface you’ll encounter. This outer tread is built around our SPD (MTB cleat) compatible, renowned fiberglass-injected nylon outsole, for the perfect balance between stability, performance and comfort.  When you’re out in the harshest of cycling conditions, you need a cycling shoe made for the worst that winter can throw at you; and our new MXZ305 features American full-grain leather upper combined with a German Helcor abrasion- and water-resistant leather toe protector, ensuring durability, comfort, and longevity. The MXZ304 had an excellent water-resistant leather upper, and we’ve taken this on board when designing the new MXZ305. The reason a wheel stays round, is because this clearly works!

Keep moisture from getting in while also allowing moisture to get out

The leather’s superior cold-weather properties and natural breathability help to maintain warmth and dryness. There’s no water-proof membrane within the MXZ305, as this would adversely affect breathability. We wanted to create a boot that gave a perfect balance between trapped air warmth, moisture control and comfort – and the MXZ305 achieves this. The leather over-flap is designed to keep the snow and debris out whilst protecting your feet from the cold, as this is a common area for winter cycling shoes allowing in moisture.

The boot inner is lined with Outlast temperature-regulating material to maintain a constant foot temperature, whilst helping to wick moisture away from the feet. Additionally, there’s 200 grams of Thinsulate insulation providing a breathable, insulating barrier that keeps your feet dry and warm.

Fundamentally, our new MXZ305 is built to be highly water resistant while maintaining breathability, which is why it does not use a full waterproof membrane. To enhance this balance, we recommend treating the leather upper with Lake leather dressing or a product such as Nikwax. These treatments help seal the seams and condition the leather, adding an extra barrier against water penetration without blocking the natural ability of the material to release moisture. This way, your feet stay drier and more comfortable in wet conditions, while the boot continues to breathe and manage sweat effectively.

Cycling in winter snow and icy conditions can be extreme; but it can also be fun and take you to new levels of adventure. By maintaining and looking after the leather on your new MXZ305, you’ll be riding through the wintry weather, wrapped in our legendary comfort for many years to come.

Close the deal with BOA – for the most secure fit possible

Critical to that comfort is how the MXZ305 keeps your feet locked in and secure is critical in winter cycling conditions; whether you’re commuting, riding for fun or bikepacking across the cold and icy landscapes of Scandinavia and the Great Lakes of North America.

The Mid Power M4 Cartridge Tongue-mounted BOA® Fit System dial excels in ice, dirt, and other challenging environments and is designed to be easily adjustable with gloves on. The mid-capacity dial combines durability and closure strength to withstand intense force and impact without sacrificing fit. The lace pull-tab on the new boot, positioned below the dial, allows adjustment further down the boot to better equalize pressure across the forefoot. In developing shoes for specific riding conditions, we incorporate proven closure technologies to maximize effectiveness and comfort. This is why Lake shoes are known worldwide for being the best-fitting and most comfortable. When Lake wraps your cycling feet in our legendary comfort, they stay firm and fitted and ready for action, all ride long!
