The MX30G is a classically designed, pure and simple off-road adventure shoe, and is perfectly suited for long days on the gravel grind. It comes as a stylish all-microfiber version and an ultra-lightweight mesh version, for those hot and humid days. The mesh option is ideal for fast river crossings in races, allowing the water to be easily released and aiding the drying process with an airflow around the foot. The microfiber upper option is tough and hard-wearing, taking care of those knocks and rocks that frequently accompany a fast paced, technical trail with the dust and gravel flying around the wheels.
MX Race Last –Featuring a slightly narrower toe box & tighter heel than the Competition last, and less overall volume than the Sport last, the MX30G fits like a second skin. That close fitting feeling ensures maximum power transfer, whilst maintaining all-important comfort. It’s designed for a slimmer fit and is most suitable for racing.
We’ve kept things light and super stiff using our Lake Race 100% Carbon Fiber Sole with our durable and grippy TPU lugs to give you a reliable grip on those loose and technical surfaces. The lugged over-sole also has provisions for toe spikes for when the ground is extremely soft and you require that additional security of foot placement. It’s a stiff sole that guarantees grip, and keeps your feet firmly planted on the pedals, controlling the bike on the loose ground as the trails twist and turn.
Available in two options- lightweight Clarino Microfiber or highly breathable mesh. The mesh option uses an ultra-breathable fabric from the toe box across the bridge of the foot and around the heel area. We’ve included padding around the heel so that it grips against your foot and lower ankle without discomfort, keeping your foot stable and ready to ride.
The microfiber option utilizes the hard-wearing properties of Clarino to bring you a robust off-road cycling shoe. This durable option can take knocks from the toughest of trails and keep your feet comfortable on the gravel grind.
We’ve chosen the BOA® Fit System Li2 dials to deliver ultimate precision in wrapping the upper around your unique cycling feet. The Li2 dial is the most advanced platform in cycling, offering a precise, micro-adjustable fit in both directions and is designed to resist abrasion. It’s perfect for what we believe is the best gravel bike specific shoe available today.
Quality and fit are top notch. Love the reversible BOA system. The quibbles I have:
- The cleat recess isn't deep enough. Because of the hard sole, a standard Shimano SPD cleat doesn't dig in at all when torqued to specification. The result is that the cleat itself protrudes beyond the rubber on either side rather than being ~1mm recessed, and if you walk on a perfectly flat surface it's actually the cleat, rather than the rubber, in contact with the ground. This defeats the whole point of a recessed cleat for those of us who ride SPD on the road.
- The rubber portions of the sole are EXTREMELY hard, almost like walking on plastic blocks. For those of us who ride SPD on the road for walkability, this shoe is barely more walkable than one of the 3-hole systems.
- Despite how hard the rubber portions of the sole are, they seem to be quite prone to gouges. I've only ridden for about 1000 miles with these shoes and they're already showing more cosmetic damage than shoes with 10x the use. I don't care about cosmetic damage per se, but it does have me wondering how much damage they'll weather before it turns from cosmetic to functional.
- The insole has a weird hard ridge under the first joint behind the big toe. It's super uncomfortable and I can't imagine what possible purpose it's supposed to serve. Fortunately this issue was solved with third party insoles, but this brought the total cost of the purchase over $400.
- The tongue has a tendency to get pushed down into the shoe while putting them on. Not really a big deal, just have to pull it up before tightening the BOA system. But it would be nice if the tongue was a little bit longer to make it easier to pull up.
Overall it's still the best shoe I've ever had. It's comfortable, it's light, it breathes (mesh version), it seems like it will *probably* last a long time. But for $400 it needs to be perfect to earn 5 stars, and it's not perfect.
